Prime Minister Carney campaigns in Scarborough, Ont.

April 4, 2025. Prime Minister Carney made a campaign stop in Scarborough, Ontario.

U.S. tariffs

Mr. Carney discussed U.S. tariffs which are threatening workers and businesses in the auto, steel, and aluminum industries. He referred to President Trump’s tariffs as “unjustified, unwarranted and misguided” because they will hurt Canadian and American workers. During this difficult time, PM Carney said that every dollar collected from counter tariffs will be given to affected workers and businesses. In addition, PM Carney spoke about the importance of eliminating interprovincial trade barriers.

PM Carney called Trump’s tariffs “the most significant crisis of our lifetimes” and a “threat to our sovereignty”. The Prime Minister recalled his conversation with President Trump in which he said he will not accept any attempt by the United States to weaken Canada.

“We are not just going to take it. No, we are responding with purpose and with force.” PM Carney noted that his government will continue to implement counter tariffs with the intent of causing maximum pain in the United States. Read more about Canada’s response to U.S. tariffs here.

We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.

Mr. Carney echoed a heckler’s “elbows up” comments, which means to protect yourself or fight back. Watch this video to learn more. Mr. Carney emphasized that Canadians must look out for ourselves and each other, after being betrayed by the Americans.

Taking aim at Pierre Poilievre

In 9 days, the Liberal government did more than what Mr. Poilievre has imagined in all his decades in politics. That is, if Pierre had an imagination and didn’t just mimic Donald Trump.

The Prime Minister called Mr. Poilievre a “lifelong politician who worships at the altar of the free market despite never having actually worked in the private sector”. He drew parallels between Mr. Poilievre and President Trump, calling Mr. Poilievre a divisive and negative politician. “Someone who believes Canada is broken won’t put Canada first.” He accused Mr. Poilievre of drawing inspiration from President Trump, saying that Mr. Poilievre would rather kneel down to President Trump instead of standing up to him.

Building new affordable homes

Mr. Carney stressed affordability, particularly in building more affordable homes, as well as to build Canada into an energy superpower. With respect to local issues, Mr. Carney stated his government’s eagerness to speed up the Scarborough subway extension project and build a high speed rail between Toronto and Quebec City.

Mr. Carney took a moment to admire the diversity of the crowd and thanked some of his supporters who were left stranded outside due to capacity limits of the venue.
